The Holy Spirit Is Your Teacher

What does it mean that the Holy Spirit is your teacher?

The Holy Spirit is the best teacher you could ever have. But we must dial into His voice to hear His teaching. We must abide in Christ, develop a relationship with Him, to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's teaching.

In 1 John 2:27, the Apostle John speaks about the anointing believers have received from God. This anointing refers to the Holy Spirit, who teaches and guides us in all truth. The verse emphasizes the sufficiency of the Holy Spirit's teaching and the importance of abiding in Christ.

"But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him." 1 John 2:27 ESV.

Background:

The first Epistle of John was written to address false teachings and to reassure believers of their faith in Jesus Christ. In the preceding verses, John warns against antichrists and false teachers who seek to deceive. He reassures believers that they have received an anointing from the Holy Spirit, which helps them discern truth from error.

The Holy Spirit is our most important and trustworthy teacher. He is the only teacher who truly matters. Whenever you hear or read any teaching (including the devotional studies at Scriptural Grace) or listen to any preacher or teacher, always let the Holy Spirit confirm it in your heart. If He doesn't, it's best to set that teaching aside or even dismiss it. Trust the Holy Spirit to understand what is true and important.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS YOUR TEACHER

The Holy Spirit Will Teach You

Here are 4 points to remind you of the role the Holy Spirit plays in your life as your teacher:

  1. When we accept Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit, who lives within us. This indwelling presence is what John refers to as the "anointing." This anointing is a permanent gift that assures us of God’s guidance and truth.

  2. The Holy Spirit teaches us everything we need to know about living a godly life and understanding God's Word. Unlike human teachers, the Holy Spirit’s teaching is always true and trustworthy.

  3. John is not dismissing the value of human teachers in 1 John 2:27, but is emphasizing that the ultimate authority is the Holy Spirit. While pastors and teachers can provide valuable insights, we should always seek the Holy Spirit's confirmation.

  4. Abiding in Christ means living in a close, ongoing relationship with Him, relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us. As we abide in Christ, the Holy Spirit continues to teach and remind us of God’s truths.

The Holy Spirit will teach you and guide you

Here are some tips to help you abide in Christ and be sensitive to the teaching and guidance of the Holy Spirit:

1. Rely on the Holy Spirit for Understanding:

Before reading the Bible or listening to a sermon, pray for the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to understand and apply the truth.

Trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth and help you discern what is right.

2. Evaluate Teachings:

When you hear new teachings, ask the Holy Spirit to confirm whether they align with God’s Word. If something doesn’t sit right, don’t ignore that feeling. Pray for clarity and seek Scripture for confirmation.

3. Abide in Christ Daily:

Make time each day to connect with Jesus through prayer, Bible study, and quiet reflection. Let the Holy Spirit lead you in your decisions and actions, ensuring that your life reflects Christ’s love and truth.

4. Stay Humble and Teachable:

Remain open to learning and growing in your faith. The Holy Spirit can teach us through various means, including other believers, circumstances, and personal study. Keep a humble heart, ready to receive correction and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

1 John 2:27 reassures us that the Holy Spirit is our ultimate and most reliable teacher. He lives within us, guiding us into all truth and helping us to abide in Christ. As we navigate our spiritual journey, let's rely on the Holy Spirit to teach, guide, and confirm the truths of God’s Word in our hearts.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, our teacher and guide. Help us to rely on Him for understanding and discernment. Teach us to abide in Christ daily, and to trust the Holy Spirit's leading in all things. May we grow in truth and love, reflecting Your light to the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
