One of the most important parts of a Christian's journey is learning how to apply Scripture—God's Word—to everyday life. This is how we learn to live like Jesus, growing in our faith and becoming more like Him each day. But with all the distractions and demands of life, it can be challenging to find the time and focus needed for meaningful Bible study.
That's why having dedicated devotional time with Jesus is so crucial. It's in these quiet moments that we allow His Word to speak into our hearts, guiding us, shaping us, and helping us navigate the complexities of life with His wisdom and love.
The Bible reminds us of this truth in passages like Psalm 119:105, which says,
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Regular time in Scripture illuminates our way, helping us make decisions and live in alignment with God's will.
In Matthew 4:4, Jesus Himself tells us, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Just as our bodies need food, our spirits need nourishment from God's Word. Daily devotional time is how we feed our souls, ensuring that we are spiritually strong and ready to face whatever comes our way.
But where do we start?
How can we make sure our time in the Bible is not just a routine, but a transformative experience?
This is where the S.O.A.P. Devotional Method comes in! It's a simple yet powerful way to engage with Scripture, helping you not only to read God’s Word but to understand it, apply it, and let it change you from the inside out.
SOAP Devotional Method - Perfect Bible Study For Beginners
By using the SOAP method—Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer—you'll find that your devotional time becomes more focused and fruitful. This method encourages you to dig deeper into God's Word and draw out practical lessons that can be applied to your everyday life.
It’s about following the example set in James 1:22, where we are urged to
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
It's all about learning to live like Jesus, step by step, day by day.
So, if you're ready to take your Bible study to the next level and experience real growth in your walk with Christ, the SOAP Devotional Method is a wonderful place to start. Let’s dive in together and see how God can use this time to draw you closer to Him!
Scripture
Begin by selecting a passage from the Bible. It could be a verse, a chapter, or a few verses that stand out to you. Write it down in your journal. This step is crucial because it gets the Word of God in front of you, where you can meditate on it.
For example, you might choose Philippians 4:6-7, which says:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Observation
This is where you slow down and take a closer look at the text.
What do you see?
Are there any repeated words, phrases, or themes?
What stands out to you in this passage?
Ask questions like, “Who is speaking? To whom? What is the context?”
Write down your observations. For instance, in the Philippians passage, you might observe the emphasis on prayer as a response to anxiety and the promise of God’s peace.
Application
Next, consider how the scripture applies to your life. What is God saying to you through this passage? How can you apply this truth in your daily walk with Christ? This step is about moving from understanding to action. Using our example, you might apply the verse by making a habit of turning your worries into prayers, trusting that God’s peace will guard your heart and mind.
Prayer
Finally, turn your thoughts into a prayer. This is your chance to respond to God, thanking Him for His Word, asking for help in applying it, and bringing any requests or concerns before Him. Your prayer could be as simple as, "Lord, thank You for reminding me to bring my anxieties to You in prayer. Help me to trust in Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Amen."
My top tip for your time in prayer is to use the simple A.C.T.S ancroynm when you pray. The Lord will use the scriptures you have just written and studied, to speak to your heart. In prayer, praise God for all He has done, confess any sins that come to mind, thank the Lord, and then ask for His help for what ever situation is on your mind.
A - Adoration - your prayers of worship and praise.
C - Confession -
T - Thanksgiving
S - Supplication
