The Holy Spirit As Helper

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with, just doing life?

Do you know the Holy Spirit as Helper?

The Holy Spirit knows what you need and when you need it. I had just recently chatted with one of the women in our Restoring Beauty For Ashes Facebook Group about this very thing!

We were talking about how we were both feeling exhausted and didn't really want to spend time with others on a particular day. We just needed a bit of space to recharge our batteries. However, God brought people into our lives, and instead of being an extra burden, their presence encouraged and refreshed us. And our batteries became supercharged (well mine did!)

The Holy Spirit knew exactly what we needed at that specific time. The exciting lesson the Holy Spirit taught me that day was that not only did He provide the encouragement I desperately needed, but the people who blessed me were also encouraged by my presence! (I was the only person available who could minister to an elderly couple at that specific time)

There are moments in all our lives when we need the supernatural help that only the Holy Spirit, our Helper, can provide. During times of trouble and uncertainty, it's incredibly comforting to know that we are not left alone to face life's challenges.

Before His crucifixion, Jesus promised His disciples a Helper who would continue His work and provide comfort and guidance.

The Holy Spirit As Helper To The Disciples

Read John 14:16-18

Click on the verse to read it in various translations at Biblegateway.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,  even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." John 14:16-18 ESV.

As Jesus prepared for His crucifixion, He saw the growing sadness and confusion among His disciples. They were anxious about facing life without His physical presence. Understanding their fears and anxieties about the future, Jesus reassured His disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit, a divine Helper who would stay with them forever. This promise extends to us today, offering reassurance and hope in every season of our lives.

In these verses in the ESV translation, the Holy Spirit is referred to as Helper. If you read the same verses in other Bible translations you will see the Holy Spirit referred to as either, Advocate, or Counselor.

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." John 14:16-18 NIV

"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever—

The Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot receive (welcome, take to its heart), because it does not see Him or know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him, for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.

I will not leave you as orphans [comfortless, desolate, bereaved, forlorn, helpless]; I will come [back] to you." John 14:16-18 AMPC

Parakletos - The Holy Spirit Helper

The original Greek word for Holy Spirit as Helper is "parakletos." This word is rich with meaning, referring to someone uniquely gifted to come alongside another and provide assistance. When Jesus walked the earth, He came alongside His disciples, helping them with the challenges they faced, such as providing food when they were hungry.

"Parakletos" also means intercessor, assistant, or one who pleads the cause of another before a judge. Therefore, the role of the Holy Spirit is all-encompassing. He is our Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby. The Holy Spirit is always with us, ready to support and guide us through every aspect of our lives.

Holy Spirit Is My Helper

What does it mean for you that the Holy Spirit is your helper?

If you are depressed, the Holy Spirit can help you with encouragement. If you are discouraged, He can help you with new strength. If you are afraid, He can help you by calming your fears. And if you are alone, the Holy Spirit can be your friend.

When you understand that the Holy Spirit is your Helper, it impacts your life in several meaningful ways:

  1. Constant Presence: Knowing that the Holy Spirit is always with you means you are never alone. In moments of loneliness, fear, or uncertainty, you can find comfort in the awareness that the Spirit is always by your side.

  2. Guidance and Wisdom: The Holy Spirit provides us with holy guidance and wisdom. When faced with difficult decisions or complex situations, you can rely on the Spirit to lead you in the right direction and to reveal truths you might not see on your own.

  3. Strength and Support: As your Strengthener, the Holy Spirit empowers you to face challenges and endure trials. This means you can tackle obstacles with confidence, knowing you have the Lord's strength supporting you.

  4. Intercession: The Holy Spirit intercedes for you, praying on your behalf even when you don’t know how to pray or what to pray for.

  5. Comfort and Peace: In times of distress, grief, or anxiety, the Holy Spirit provides comfort and peace that surpasses human understanding. This will help you to remain calm and hopeful, even in the midst of chaos.

  6. Advocacy: As your Advocate, the Holy Spirit defends you. He is your advocate who stands up for us in spiritual battles.

  7. Growth and Transformation: The Holy Spirit works within you to transform your character, helping you to grow in spiritual maturity and to reflect the fruits of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  8. Empowerment for Service: The Holy Spirit equips you with spiritual gifts and empowers you to serve others effectively.

Be encouraged! You can live boldly and confidently, knowing you are equipped and accompanied by God's Spirit in all aspects of your life.
