GLORY OF THE LORD VERSES

Glory meaning in the bible

The glory of God is a central theme in the Bible, encompassing His intrinsic worth, the manifestation of His presence, the revelation of His character, and His work in creation and redemption. As believers, understanding and reflecting God's glory is our privilege and calling, leading us to a deeper relationship with Him and a greater impact on the world around us.

When we understand God's glory, we get a clearer picture of who He is and how incredibly majestic He is.

God's glory is seen in His perfect qualities' beauty, worth, and greatness. He shows His glory through everything He creates and through the way He saves and redeems us.

Here are 3 questions to answer before we dive into our 30 Glory verses:

1. What is God's glory?

The title "God of Glory" or "El Hakkavod" in the Bible represents God's majestic and splendid nature. In Hebrew, "kavod" means "glory," "honor," or "majesty," and it describes the radiant presence, weight, and splendor of God throughout the Old Testament. This glory is linked to God's character, power, holiness, and presence.

Here are some examples of God's glory in the Bible:

  • Glory as the Visible Manifestation of God: In the Old Testament, the glory of God is often associated with a visible manifestation of His presence. For example, the glory of the Lord appeared to the Israelites as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night during their wilderness journey (Exodus 13:21). The glory of God also filled the Tabernacle and later the temple, signifying His presence among His people (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11).

  • Glory as Honor and Praise: Glory is also used in the Bible to refer to the honor and praise that is due to God. In Psalm 29:1-2, David calls on the heavenly beings to "ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name," emphasizing the worship and honor that is to be given to God. Similarly, in the New Testament, believers are called to glorify God in all that they do (1 Corinthians 10:31).

  • Glory as the Character of God: Another aspect of glory in the Bible is the character and nature of God Himself. In Exodus 33:18-19, Moses asks to see God's glory, and God responds by proclaiming His name and his attributes of mercy, grace, and justice. The glory of God is intricately connected to His righteousness and holiness.

  • Glory as the Goal of Creation: Ultimately, the Bible teaches that the glory of God is the ultimate goal of creation. In Romans 11:36, Paul declares, "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever." The glory of God is to be magnified and exalted above all else, and all of creation is meant to reflect His glory.

As believers, recognizing God as the "God of Glory" calls us to worship and revere His supreme majesty, honor, and splendor. Psalm 19:1 declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork." It reminds us of God's sovereignty, holiness, and power in our lives.

2. What is the glory of the Lord?

In the New Testament, the Greek word for glory is "doxa," which also conveys the idea of praise, honor, and majesty. We see the glory of the Lord revealed through Jesus Christ.

John 1:14 tells us that Jesus, the one and only Son of God, came to show us the Father's glory, full of grace and truth. Jesus, as the Son of God, displayed the glory of God through His teachings, miracles, and sacrificial death on the cross for our redemption. The apostle Paul also talks about this transformation in believers, how we are filled with God's presence and changed to be more like Him.

In 2 Corinthians 3:18, he writes, "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."

Ultimately, the glory of the Lord points to His divine nature, His power, and His holiness. It is a reminder of His majesty and sovereignty over all creation. As believers, we are called to reflect the glory of the Lord in our lives through obedience, worship, and service to others, so that others may see God's glory through us and be drawn to Him.

This leads us to the last question to consider before we dive into our 30 Bible verses about the glory of the Lord, what does it mean to be 'glory carriers'?

3. What does it mean to be 'glory carriers'?

To be glory carriers means to reflect the glory of God in our lives, to carry His presence, and to bring Him glory through our actions and attitudes. Here are some key things to consider in being a glory carrier:

  • Relationship with God: To reflect God's glory, we must first have a personal relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ. This relationship is the foundation of being a glory carrier.

  • Living a holy life: Living a holy and righteous life is essential in being a glory carrier. This involves living in obedience to God's Word, repenting of sin, and cultivating a life of purity and integrity.

  • Surrender: Being a glory carrier requires surrendering our desires, ambitions, and will to God. It is about allowing His Spirit to work in and through us, guiding our thoughts, words, and actions.

  • Faith: Having faith in God's power and promises is crucial in carrying His glory. Trusting in His goodness and sovereignty allows us to walk in confidence and boldness as representatives of His glory.

  • Worship: Engaging in worship and praise opens the door for God's glory to manifest in our lives. When we exalt and honor Him with our whole heart, His presence descends upon us and others can see His glory shining through us.

  • Love: Demonstrating love towards God and others is a powerful way to carry His glory. When we love sacrificially, forgive freely, and show compassion, we reflect the very nature of God and His glory is made known.

  • Being a witness: Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others is a powerful way to bring glory to God. Sharing our faith and pointing others to Him ultimately glorifies Him.

  • Prayer and dependence on God: Seeking God's guidance through prayer and relying on His strength and power helps us to be effective glory carriers. Trusting in God's provision and sovereignty demonstrates our dependence on Him.

  • Joy and gratitude: Having a joyful and grateful attitude in all circumstances reflects God's goodness and faithfulness. By having a mindset of thankfulness, we demonstrate our trust in Him and bring glory to His name.

Being a glory carrier involves living a life that honors and glorifies God in all we do. It is about being vessels through which His glory can shine brightly, impacting and transforming the world around us.

Glory Of The Lord Verses from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

1. Introduction to God's glory: Exodus 33:18-23

Moses asks to see God's glory.

"Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”  And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.  But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”  And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,  and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.  Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.” Exodus 33:18-23 ESV.

  • Reflection: Consider the significance of Moses' request and God's response.

2. God's glory in creation: Psalm 19:1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day-to-day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat." Psalm 19:1-6 ESV.

  • Reflection: Consider how creation reveals the glory of God.

3. The glory of God revealed to Moses - The Shekinah Glory: Exodus 40:34-38

Moses completes the Tabernacle and the glory of the Lord fills it.

"Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.  And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out.  But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up.  For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys." Exodus 40:34-38.

  • Reflection: Reflect on the significance of the glory of God filling the Tabernacle.

4. God's glory at the temple: 1 Kings 8:10-11

The glory of the Lord filled the temple when Solomon dedicated it.

"And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord." 1 Kings 8:10-11 ESV.

  • Reflection: Just as the temple was filled with the glory of the Lord, we should strive to make our hearts and lives a dwelling place for God's presence through worship, prayer, and obedience to his word.

5. God's glory filling the earth: Habakkuk 2:14

God's glory will be known and recognized by all.

"For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." Habakkuk 2:14 ESV.

  • Reflection: Reflect on the promise of the glory of God filling the earth. Consider the implications of this verse in light of the challenges and struggles we face today.

6. The glory of God shown to the prophet Ezekiel: Ezekiel 1:28

The image of the rainbow in the clouds symbolizes the radiance and beauty of God's glory.

" Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking." Ezekiel 1:28 ESV.

  • Reflection: Consider ways you can seek to behold and appreciate the glory of God more in your daily life.

7. The weight of God's glory: Job 37:22

God’s glory surpasses anything we can imagine or comprehend. It is radiant, majestic, and awe-inspiring.

"Out of the north comes golden splendor; God is clothed with awesome majesty."

  • Reflection: Consider the weightiness of God's glory. Respond by praising Him for His greatness.

8. God's glory in Christ: John 1:14

The incarnation of Jesus Christ, how God became human and lived among us.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14 ESV.

  • Reflection: Embrace God's presence. Jesus's coming to earth shows us that God is present with us in our daily lives.

9. Christ the image of God's glory: Hebrews 1:1-3

This passage highlights the superiority of Jesus Christ as the final and complete revelation of God to humanity.

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,  but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.  He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high" Hebrews 1:1-3 ESV.

  • Reflection: Do these verses challenge you to fully acknowledge and submit to the authority of Jesus Christ, to trust in his redemptive work, and to live in faithful obedience and worship towards Him?

10. The glory of God displayed through Jesus' miracles: John 2:11, John 11:4.

In these two verses from the Gospel of John, we witness the power and glory of Jesus Christ revealed in miraculous ways.

"This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him." John 2:11 ESV.

"But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:4 ESV.

  • Reflection: Consider how these miracles show us the power and authority of Jesus to transform situations and provide abundantly beyond what we expect.

11. Jesus praying for God's glory: John 17:1-5

John 17:1-5 contains the prayer of Jesus before his crucifixion.

"When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,  since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.  And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.  I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.  And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed." John 17:1-5 ESV.

  • Reflection: Jesus prayed for His own glorification and the glorification of God through His actions. We can follow this example by seeking to bring glory to God in all that we do, by living a life that reflects His love, grace, and truth.

12. The glory of God in the crucifixion: Luke 23:44-46

Jesus' words exemplify the ultimate act of submission and faith. Despite the excruciating circumstances, Jesus remained steadfast in his trust in God's plan.

"It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.  Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last." Luke 23:44-46 ESV.

  • Reflection: Reflect on how we can find comfort and hope in trusting God's sovereignty and ultimate plan, even in the darkest of times.

13. The glory of God in the resurrection: Romans 6:4.

The apostle Paul wonderfully captures the heart of our faith, showing how baptism transforms our lives.

"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."

  • Reflection: Consider how being buried with Christ in baptism symbolizes our old self dying with Him, and rising to new life in Him.

Bible verses about being 'glory carriers'.

14. Understanding the concept of 'Glory carriers': Exodus 33:18

Moses' request to see God's glory reflects a hunger for deeper spiritual understanding and growth.

"Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” Exodus 33:18

  • Reflection: Moses, a man who had already experienced God’s power and presence in numerous ways, goes a step further by longing to see God’s glory. We should have a similar hunger to know God more intimately and grow in our relationship with Him.

15. Moses asks God for His presence to accompany him and the Israelites: Exodus 33:14

Moses sought reassurance from God, desiring His presence to accompany them as the Israelites journeyed through the wilderness. The Israelites had sinned by worshipping the golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. In response to this rebellion, God expresses His anger and tells Moses He might not go with them to the Promised Land.

"And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14 ESV

  • Reflection: Reflect on the significance of God's promise to go with the Israelites and give them rest. How does this apply to being a glory carrier of God in your life today?

16. Becoming carriers of God's glory: John 17:22

Jesus mentions that He has given His disciples the same glory that God gave him. Jesus has given us the same glory that God gave Him. We share in the glory of God through our relationship with Christ!

"The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one," John 17:22 ESV.

  • Reflection: Just as Jesus reflected the glory of God, we should strive to reflect God's glory in our own lives through our actions, words, and relationships.

17. Implications of carrying God's glory: 2 Corinthians 3:18, Exodus 34:29-35

Reflecting God's glory: Just as Moses' face shone with the glory of God after being in His presence, we are called to reflect God's glory in our lives.

" And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV.

"When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.  Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.  But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them.  Afterward, all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai.  And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded,  the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him."

  • Reflection: The process of becoming a glory carrier involves transformation. As we seek God and spend time in His presence, we are transformed more and more into His image.

18. Living temples of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Being carriers of God's glory means that we are entrusted with the precious presence of the Holy Spirit.

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price. So glorify God

  • Reflection: As temples of the Holy Spirit, we are called to honor God with our bodies, our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Our lives should reflect the light and glory of God in everything we do.

19. Living for God's glory: 1 Corinthians 10:31

Being a glory carrier means we need to live intentionally, making choices that honor and magnify God.

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Reflection: Paul the apostle reminds us that everything we do should be done for the glory of God – even the seemingly mundane tasks like eating and drinking.

20. How to be a glory carrier in hard times: 1 Peter 4:12-16

As we carry the glory of God within us, we are reminded that our identity is found in Christ and not in the circumstances we face.

"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.  If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory[a] and of God rests upon you.  But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler.  Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name." 1 Peter 4:12-16 ESV.

Reflection: Our response to suffering should be to glorify God, recognizing that even during trials, He is working for our good and His glory.

21. We have been chosen and predestined by God to be glory carriers: Ephesians 1:11-14

Through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, we are sealed and marked as God's own possession. This seal is a guarantee of our inheritance in Christ, a promise of redemption and eternal life.

"In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,  so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,  who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory." Ephesians 1:11-14 ESV.

  • Reflection: We are chosen, sealed, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life that brings glory to God and reflects His love to the world.

22. Holy Spirit- The Spirit of Glory: 1 Peter 4:14

Even in times of insult or persecution for our faith, we are blessed because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon us.

"If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you." 1 Peter 4:14 ESV.

  • Reflection: We have the privilege of carrying the very presence of God within us, empowering us to face any situation with strength and grace.

23. Manifesting God's glory: John 15:18

Live a life of fruitful discipleship that glorifies God.

"By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples."

  • Reflection: By bearing much fruit and demonstrating ourselves as disciples of Jesus, we are reflecting the glory of God to the world. Our lives should point others to Jesus and bring honor to His name.

24. Manifestations of God's glory: John 2:11, John 11:40

The signs and wonders Jesus performed as manifestations of God's glory.

"This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him." John 2:11 ESV.

"Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”

  • Reflection: Recognize the power of Jesus: These miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over nature and death. We can take comfort in knowing that the same God who performed these miracles is at work in our lives today.

25. God's glory in our suffering: Romans 8:18

Being a glory carrier means recognizing that our struggles and hardships are not the end of the story.

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." Romans 8:18 ESV.

  • Reflection: This verse encourages us to have a perspective that looks beyond our current circumstances and focuses on the eternal hope that we have in Christ.

26. Sharing the gospel: Mark 16:15

Share the good news and bring God's glory to the world.

"And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." Mark 16:15 ESV.

  • Reflection: As glory carriers, we are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. This means actively engaging with those around us and sharing the message of hope and salvation.

27. Displaying faith for God's glory: Romans 4:20-21

Despite facing seemingly impossible circumstances, Abraham remained firm in his belief that God would fulfill His promises. This faith, rooted in the unshakeable character of God, led Abraham to give glory to God. (The promise made to Abraham was that he would be the father of many nations, even though he and his wife Sarah were well past the age of bearing children.)

"No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,  fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised."

Reflection: Romans 4:20-21 encourages us to have unwavering faith in God's promises, give glory to Him in all circumstances, and be fully persuaded of His power.

28. Christ in you the hope of glory: Colossians 1:27

The mystery of Christ living in believers and the hope of experiencing His glory.

"To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Colossians 1:27 ESV.

Reflection: We carry God's glory because Christ lives in us. This reminds us of how valuable and precious we are to God. Knowing this should positively shape how we see ourselves.

29. God's glory, the end of all things: Romans 11:33-36

Rejoice in the glory of God and give Him praise for who He is and what He has done.

"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord,    or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him    that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen."

  • Reflection: Understand that everything we have comes from God and that we can never repay Him. We need to be thankful for His blessings and provision in our lives.

We finish our study about the glory of the Lord with verses from Revelation 21:10-11.

30. The Glory of the New Jerusalem: Revelation 21:10-11

The book of Revelation provides us with a glimpse of the breathtaking glory of the Lord.

" And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,  having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal." Revelation 21:10-11 ESV.

Reflection: The glorious vision of the New Jerusalem reminds us that no matter what challenges we face, there is a new and perfect future waiting for those who are faithful to God.
