What are the names of God?
Did you know that our God, the God of the Bible has many different names? I searched for answers to my burning question, 'How many names is God known by?' The answer is a few hundred! I have made a list of God's names to study, just 30 out of the many Hebrew names that He is known by. I know that you will be mightily blessed as you study the list of God's names with me!

I love studying the powerful names of God. I find that depending on the season of life that I am in, a certain name of God deeply resonates with me. Right now El Roi which means the God who sees me is my favorite. This mighty name of God has the power to lift me out of whatever distressed state that I am in!

Why does God have so many names?
In ancient biblical times, names carried powerful significance. They weren't just used to identify one person from another. A name would also reflect a person's character, nature, and destiny.
One example is Abraham. His name meant a "father of many nations" and the name of his wife, Sarah meant "princess-the mother of many nations". And that is exactly what they were!
God has many names and they each reveal a different aspect of His character, His ways, who He is, and what He does. To know His name is to know Him. When you really know God and understand the meaning behind the names of God, it will fill your heart with faith and confidence. The vastness of God is hard to comprehend by our finite human minds!
Why is it important to know the names of God?
Prayerfully studying and meditating on the character traits and names of God and their meaning, is one of the most faith-building, encouraging things you can do for your spiritual life. As you come to learn and understand them, they will dispel your anxiety and boost your faith.
When you know the true character of God, it will enable you to trust Him more. By renewing your mind through meditating and studying the names of God and especially their meaning, the truth will dissolve all doubt and breathe life into your soul!
Before we dive into these 30 powerful Hebrew names of God and learn how to pray through each name, I want to show you a few Bible verses that speak about the blessings we gain from really knowing God.

As you study these names of God, ask Him to reveal Himself to you in greater clarity than you have ever experienced before. When you pray the word of God, you are praying His words of truth into your situation. It is the same when you pray the names of God. When you understand the meaning of the specific name of God and pray it over your situation-it is declaring His power over it. It certainly will build your faith and expectation of God to move in it.
30 Powerful Hebrew Names Of God And Their Meaning :
1. Elohim
Elohim means God The Creator (Genesis 1:1)
Elohim is the Hebrew name for God and it is found in the very first sentence of the Bible.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.
This ancient name of God contains the idea of God's creative power as well as His authority and sovereignty.
When you pray to God The Creator, you are remembering that God is the powerful creator who can create order out of your chaos. He can create a beautiful masterpiece out of your life.

2. Yahweh
Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God meaning I Am, The Self-Existent One. I Am. He was. He is. He always has been and always will be. He is the Self-Existent One with no beginning and no end.
We first come across the name Yahweh-I Am with the infamous conversation between Moses and God at the burning bush.
God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh,[b] the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.
This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations. Exodus 3:14-15.
When you pray the name of God Yahweh, you are praying to the One true God that has always existed and will have no end. All the 30 powerful Hebrew names of God on this list are an extension of Yahweh.

3. El Roi
El Roi is the Hebrew name for God meaning the God who sees me. We discover this name of God in Genesis 16:14-15. We meet Hagar, an Egyptian slave, who encountered God in the desert and addressed Him as El-Roi, "the God who sees me."
Hagar had been badly mistreated by Sari, Abrahams's wife and she had run away.
Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.”[a] She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”14 So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”). It can still be found between Kadesh and Bered. Genesis 16:13-14.
When you pray to God as El Roi, you are praying to the God who sees you in every situation. Hagar called God by this name when He saw her in her distressing situation and provided for her. God sees you too!

4. El Shaddai
El Shaddai is the Hebrew name for God meaning The All-Sufficient One, God Almighty. This is the name that God revealed to Abram when He established an everlasting covenant with him and his descendants.
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.2 I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.” Genesis 17:1-2.
When you pray to El Shaddai, you are praying to God Almighty, the all-sufficient One. He has everything that you need to sustain you.

5. El Olam
El Olam is the Hebrew name for God meaning He has no beginning and no end. He is the Everlasting God or the Eternal God.
After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines. 33 Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the Lord, the Eternal God. Genesis 21:32-33.
When you pray to El Olam you are praying to the Everlasting God or God Eternal. He is your refuge, a safe place for you.

6. Yahweh Yireh
Yahweh-Yireh is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord will provide.
Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:13-14.
When you pray to Yahweh Yireh, you are praying to the God who sees your situation beforehand and is able to provide for your needs.

7. Adonai-Lord And Master
Adonai is the Hebrew name for God meaning Lord and Master. It is the generic term for lord in Hebrew. It is first seen in scripture when Abram, longing for an heir, cries out to God.
I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.” Psalm 16:2.
When you pray to God as Adoni-Lord and Master, you are coming to His throne with a renewed awe of His greatness. God's desire is for you to submit to Him, to learn of His ways, so that it will go well with you in this life.
Abram called out to God as his Master. Abram called out to Adoni, who is sovereign and who held the answers to everything in his circumstances. We can be like Abram. 8. Yahweh Rapha
Yahweh Rapha is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord who heals. God is our Healer, in both body and soul!
He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all His decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26.
This name assures each of us that our Heavenly Father wants to restore us to wholeness.

When you pray to God as Yahweh Rapha, you are praying to the God who heals. God is our Healer. God doesn't want you to carry any bitterness or to be sick in any way.
9. Yahweh Nissi
Yahweh Nissi is the Hebrew name for God meaning, the Lord is my banner. The name Yahweh Nissi only appears once in the Bible in Genesis 17:15.
Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). Exodus 17:15.
Banners are like today’s flags. They are lifted to a height where we can see them as a reminder that symbolizes: security, hope, and freedom. In ancient times these banners could be seen from a far distance and they served as a rallying point for troops before a battle.

10. El Kanna-Consuming Fire
El Kanna is the Hebrew name for God meaning consuming fire, jealous God. This name contains a holy version of jealousy that God has for His people.
God is jealous for you and me. We are greatly loved and treasured!
You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you. Exodus 34:14.
When you pray to God as El Kanna, you are praying to God who is jealous for you. You are His, you belong to Him and He is passionately pursuing you.

11. Yahweh Shalom
Yahweh Shalom is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord is peace.
The first time we see this name used for God is in Judges 6. Gideon was afraid he would die after seeing the angel of the Lord face to face. But the Lord said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die”. This had such an impact on Gideon that he built an altar there and named it Yahweh Shalom (Judges 6:22-24).
And Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and named it Yahweh-Shalom (which means “the Lord is peace”). The altar remains in Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer to this day. Judges 6:24.
When you pray to Yahweh Shalom you are praying to the Lord who is the source of all peace. Keep your eyes on God and not on the strife and turmoil going on in the world around you.

12. Qedosh Yisrael
Qedosh Yisrael is the Hebrew name for God meaning Holy One Of Israel.
The Lord also said to Moses,2 “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:1-2.
The biggest mystery to me is that Qedosh Yisrael desires for us to be holy too and recognizing that is impossible, then He provides a way for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, and the finished work of the cross to enable us to become holy enough o enter His presence.
God is holy. That is His nature. He is total perfection. When you pray to Qedosh Yisrael, you are praying to the God whose holiness separates Him from sin and evil but it is also full of His power, knowledge, justice, mercy, goodness, and love.

13. Yahweh Tsuri
Yahweh Tsuri is the Hebrew name for God, meaning the Lord is my rock.
The word "rock" represents God's permanence, His protection, and His enduring faithfulness.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 18:2.
The New Testament identifies Jesus as the spiritual rock that accompanied the Israelites during the long walk through the desert. You can read about that in 1 Corinthians 10:1-5. He is also described as the stone the builders rejected but He has become the cornerstone of God's church.
When you pray to Yahweh Tsuri you are praying to the Lord your Rock you and you are praying to the God who can always be counted on. He never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His plans and purposes remain firm throughout history.

14. Yahweh Roi
Yahweh Roi is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord is my Shepherd.
This wonderful name and assurance of God from Psalm 23:1 appear only once in the Old Testament.
The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need. Psalm 23:1.
However, there are numerous scriptures throughout the Old Testament that keep pointing us to the Good Shepherd, the promised Messiah Jesus Christ, who would eventually give His life for His sheep and offer redemption through His blood that was poured out for us on the cross, so that we can obtain salvation, peace, eternal life and restore the relationship with God and gaining access to His presence all the time.
When you pray to Yahweh Roi you are praying to the Lord who is your Shepherd and you are praying to the One who watches over you day and night, feeding you and guiding you on the path of righteousness.

15. El Elyon
El Elyon is the Hebrew name for God meaning, God Most High. God is supreme. He deserves all our focus, worship, and praise.
I will thank the Lord because he is just;
I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. Psalm 7:17.
In the New Testament Jesus is known as the Son of the Most High while the Holy Spirit is the power of the Most High. There is no one that can match El Elyon. He alone is sovereign, most powerful, and most merciful.
When you pray to El Elyon you are praying to God Most High who fulfills His purpose for you and whose power, mercy, and sovereignty cannot be matched.

16. Yahweh Shammah
Yahweh Shammah is the Hebrew name for God meaning, the Lord is there. This name appears once in the Old Testament and it can be found in Ezekial 48:35. It describes how the Presence of God fills the millennial Kingdom.
The distance around the entire city will be 6 miles. And from that day the name of the city will be ‘The Lord Is There.’

17. Miqweh Yisrael
Miqweh Yisrael is the Hebrew name for God meaning Hope of Israel.
O Lord, you alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you, O Lord, from childhood. Psalm 71:5.
This name of God occurs in both Old and New Testaments. The Hebrew word Miqweh means “to wait or look for with eager expectation”. God is the object of our very highest hopes and He never lets us down.
When you pray to Yiqweh Yisrael, you are praying to the One who saves everyone who trusts in Him.

18. Magen
Magen is the Hebrew name for God meaning, the Lord is my shield, my protector. God is your shield. You might not be able to see all that God protects you from but He does protect you.
But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. Psalm 3:3.
The Bible tells us that God is your shield. He is my shield and my protector! That means He is yours too!

19. Migdal-Oz
Migdal-Oz is the Hebrew name for God meaning my strong tower or stronghold.
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe. Psalm 18:10.
Strongholds are fortified defensive structures or a place that is in a position of strength and safety.
In biblical times, some cities were enclosed by walls that were twenty-five feet thick. Farmers would work in their fields during the day outside the city walls and then they would retreat within the city walls during the night to keep them safe. If the city had a good stronghold, then the enemy couldn't break through their defenses and the people and their food supply would remain safe.

20. Atik Yomin
Atik Yomin is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Ancient Of Days.
God is referenced as the "Ancient of Days" three times in the book of Daniel, chapter seven.
I watched as thrones were put in place
and the Ancient One sat down to judge.
His clothing was as white as snow,
his hair like purest wool. He sat on a fiery throne with wheels of blazing fire Daniel 7:9.
The name Atik Yomin-The Ancient Of Days does not point to an elderly ruler made feeble by age, but to a divine ruler who is eternally all-powerful. He is the everlasting God who rules in sovereignty. This name of God points to Him as the divine judge.

21. Basileus Basileon
Basileus Basileon is the Greek name for God meaning The King Of Kings. The title King of Kings is applied once to God the Father (1 Timothy 6:15), and twice to the Lord Jesus (Revelation 17:14; 19:16)
In Revelation 19:16 Jesus is given the full title “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS”.
On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

22. El Sali
El Sali is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord is my strength or God my rock.
A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:
"I love You fervently and devotedly, O Lord, my Strength." Psalm 18:1.

23. Yatsar
Yatsar is the Hebrew name for God meaning to fashion, to frame, the potter. Yatsar is this incredibly descriptive Hebrew word that actually means to take shape by squeezing. It is a potter’s term.
And yet, O Lord, you are our Father.
We are the clay, and you are the potter.
We all are formed by your hand. Isaiah 64:8.
God is the Master Potter and we are His clay. Our lives rest in His hands and it is a safe place to be.
Just like a skilled potter can transform a lump of clay into a beautifully formed pot that is perfect for a specific use, so can our Master Potter transform us into beautiful vessels that God can use in our world.

When you pray to Yaster you are praying to the Master Potter and you are praying to the One who molds and creates and restores you to the person He has created you to be.
24. Abba, Pater
Abba, Pater means 'Father'. The Hebrew scriptures don't mention God as the Father of individuals but as Father to Israel. The Hebrew people considered God's name to be so holy, that they would not speak or even write it.
And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18.
The Aramaic word for Father is Abba which translates as "dear father". You and I would know this term of endearment as "Daddy".
Jesus offended and upset many of the Jewish elders because He would refer to God as His Father!

When you pray to Abba, Pater you are praying to God as your Father, you are praying to the One who sees you as His precious child and counts every hair on your head!
25. Yahweh Hesed
Yahweh Hessed is the Hebrew name of God meaning, God of forgiveness. The Hebrew word, hesed is often translated as mercy, kindness, or lovingkindness.
They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them. Nehemiah 9:17.
It is difficult to convey the absolute true definition of hesed because there is not one English word that fully describes the real, true meaning of it. But you can read more about the biblical definition of this name of God HERE.
when you pray to Yahweh Hesed you are praying to the One who is full of mercy, loving-kindness, and forgiveness.
26. Yahweh Tsidqenu
Yahweh Tsidqenu is the Hebrew name of God meaning the Lord our righteousness.
And this will be his name:
‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness.’
In that day Judah will be saved,
and Israel will live in safety. Jeremiah 23:6.
The word "Tsidkenu" is derived from "Tsedek" and means "righteousness," "right," "honest," accurate," justice", "truth," or "integrity." Righteousness means that you and I are in right standing with God. Our sinful natures are measured against God's holy nature.
So God sent His Son Jesus Christ to redeem us from our lost state and bring us into a personal relationship with Him. You can read more about this interesting name of God HERE.
When you pray to Yahweh Tsidqenu you are praying to the Lord your Righteousness and to the One who has intervened on your behalf to restore you to His fellowship.
27. Ish
Ish is the Hebrew name of God meaning husband. You will find it used in the books of Hosea, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
When that day comes,” says the Lord, “you will call me ‘my husband’ instead of ‘my master.’
I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and compassion.
20 I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord. Hosea 2:16, 19-20.

28. Immanuel
Immanuel means, "God with us." It is one of the most comforting and encouraging names or titles of God.
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Matthew 1:22-23.
God knew that it was impossible for us to come into His presence because of our sin. So, God in His outrageous love for us decided to send Jesus as the "God-man" to earth to fully reveal Himself to us and to bridge the gap that our sin causes, by giving us a savior in Jesus Christ the King.

When you pray to Immanuel you are praying to God who is with you in every circumstance. He won't abandon you and remember that He loves you outrageously!
29. Iatros
Iatros is the Hebrew name of God meaning Physician. Jesus is the great physician. He has performed more healings than any other kind of miracle.
"the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” Matthew 11:5.

Alpha kai Omega is the Greek name of God meaning Alpha and Omega.
And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. Revelation 22:13.
"Alpha and Omega" are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. When Jesus calls Himself "Alpha and Omega", He is declaring that He is the first and the last, the beginning and the ending.
Jesus Christ is the beginning and Jesus Christ is the ending. He is the first and He is the last. That means that Jesus Christ is the eternal God.

You will find a free printable in the Resource Library with journal pages and a list of the 30 names of God and their meanings HERE. The journal pages have prompts to help you meditate on the scripture and the name of God. Download them on the books app or the GoodNotes app. These apps allow you to place text boxes on the journal page and you can then digitally write in your journal!

Let's talk about how to benefit from this Names of God list and scriptures:
I find that writing them out, allows you time to learn them and think about them more deeply. I have some pretty journal stationary with prompts to help you during your devotional time. It should take about 10 minutes to write each name of God and Bible verse but spend as much time as you have, sitting in God's presence and listening for His Holy Spirit speaking to your heart, instructing, and guiding you.
💡If you have purchased the Names of God workbook journal, there are more questions and journal prompts that will take longer to complete. I find that I work on them in the morning and finish up in the evening and if you need a few days saturated in the awesome goodness of a specific name of God - that is perfectly fine. It means that God's word of truth is refining and renovating your heart!💗
Copying scripture and carrying it with us throughout the day, reading it, and memorizing it, makes God's word a part of us. It renews your mind and calms your anxious heart. I have also added a page to help you plan and order your day. I'm looking forward to using these pages!
Take Action :

Find a quiet place with your cup of coffee, Bible, and a favorite pen or journal on your iPad!
Pray as you write your scripture verse for that day.
Ask God to reveal Himself to you and listen for the Holy Spirit to speak to you.
If you feel convicted of something- confess it and ask for forgiveness.
If you feel moved to worship - worship God! Just enjoy His presence.
Most important: make an appointment with yourself, journal, and God every day for your scripture writing time. I find it works best for me to do it in the morning. It helps me to gain ' God's perspective' on my day. But you do it at your own perfect time. The important thing to remember is to do it and if you miss a day - just double up the next one!
